On screen keyboard on the iPhone

There is no substitute for a real keyboard. Any true blackberry enthusiast will tell you that. That said, it’s a trade off for screen size Vs keyboard unless you go for a slide out keyboard. Apple’s on screen keyboard is one of the best I have used. The Windows mobile one is awful. HTC have tried to augment it with varying success. I played briefly with a Blackberry Storm and was not impressed. BUT … Apple missed a HUGE opportunity. The landscape keyboard is very good on the iPhone, problem is it was an after thought. On the first version of the firmware only a few programs supported it. Now on V3 of the firmware a whole lot more of the built in Aps support it but Apple missed the boat. They could have requested that all aps that require text input MUST support landscape mode. Clearly the ap developers won’t do it on their own. Twice now (Version 2 and now Version3) Apple have chosen to not enforce this. It is a mistake. If you get use to the landscape keyboard and it’s spacing and then have to use an ap that doesn’t support it you get frustrated fast. Which means a lot of folks don’t bother with the landscape keyboard which is a shame. I use Fring as one of the best instant messenger programs but to date they don’t support landscape. Come on folks set the bar and move it to force continuous improvement in the platform!!

Another thing missing is I wish they would put arrow keys to make it easier to move around the screen when editing. Sometimes the loupe is inconvenient.
